Before officially opening the new school, which was to be named after the late Jean Grey, Wolverine 
met with Captain America to discuss Quentin. Knowing that locking up Quentin would just create another super villain, Wolverine convinced Steve to give him a chance to mold Quentin into something more. Captain America had his doubts but ultimately trusted Logan’s judgement and assured Quentin that he would be keeping tabs on his progress. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #3]
When state officials came to inspect the Jean Grey School on opening day, Quentin was kept in detention to prevent him from causing any trouble. Disaster found the Jean Grey School anyway, as Kade Kilgore and the Hellfire Club staged a multi-faceted attack on the school. Quentin was more than happy sitting back and watching the school’s destruction unfold until he came across his fellow students, Idie Okonkwo and Broo, defending their new home. Frustrated that these newer students were completely unfamiliar with him and his “accomplishments” and perhaps a little touched by their bravery, Quentin was roused into action. The Hellfire Club had a clone of Krakoa, the living island, who had infected the very school grounds and had proved to be an unstoppable force. Sensing a kindred spirit, Quentin not only managed to access the lonely creature’s mind but was able to tame 
it, providing the Jean Grey School with an invaluable new ally. After the Hellfire Club retreated, Wolverine and the X-Men were left wondering who was responsible for Krakoa’s change of heart. They dismissed the idea that Quentin would’ve helped save the school and, not wanting to ruin his reputation, Quentin chose not to take credit for his heroic act. Unsurprisingly, Quentin was the Jean Grey School’s most troublesome student. He repeatedly attempted to stage riots, disrupted class and disrespected teachers, especially Rachel Grey who was charged by Wolverine to keep an eye on him. He bullied most of his fellow students and yet often found himself in the company of a small clique of outcasts, which included Idie, Broo and Kid Gladiator. One student in particular whom Quentin especially loathed was Evan, also known as Genesis, a good-natured boy who was unaware that he was actually a clone of the X-Men’s archenemy Apocalypse. While the X-Men tried to avoid the boy finding out about his true origin, Quentin relentlessly taunted him about it, figuring it was only a matter of time before Evan gave in to his dark nature and destroyed them all. Never forgetting the fact that he was dragged to the Jean Grey School against his will and still technically a prisoner, Quentin craved revenge against the man responsible: Wolverine. One day, Quentin trapped the minds of Wolverine and one of his favorite students, Armor, inside an elaborate psychic construct modeled as a dangerous, dystopian future. After hiding their unconscious bodies, Quentin continued to craft the details of his world and created new enemies and obstacles to throw 
at Wolverine and Armor. Unsure of what his endgame was and what would happen if he fell asleep, Quentin stayed up all night to monitor to his psychic prisoners. Quentin eventually succumbed to exhaustion and, while he slept, his creation fell into chaos and was no longer under his complete control. To make matters worse, Wolverine’s berserker persona had taken over his unconscious body and he was rampaging through the school, hunting for him.
Unable to shut his creation down, Quentin decided to enter the psychic construct himself. After revealing the truth to Wolverine and Armor, they tried to find a way out but it seemed that Quentin’s own subconscious had turned against him and the trio found themselves up against a never-ending army. Quentin figured that dying in the construct might be the only thing that could end it all. Wolverine gladly obliged and, after he stabbed Quentin in the chest, the psychic construct crumbled and the three of them returned to reality. Quentin assumed he would be sent to the Avengers for incarceration but instead Wolverine, both impressed and disturbed, asked Quentin to train him in psychic defense so no one could wreck havoc on his mind in such a way again. In need of a new source of funding for the school, Wolverine took Quentin to an intergalactic casino on Planet Sin, where he could put his mental powers to good use and help Wolverine win big at the tables. While the plan was to have Quentin simply count cards and let Logan know his odds, he 
predictably got carried away and was soon playing on his own, telekinetically manipulating dice, flirting with alien girls and showboating his winnings. It didn’t take long for casino security to notice and Quentin and Wolverine had to fight their way through bouncers to get back to their ship. It was during this battle that Quentin manifested a “psychic shotgun” for the first time, an ability that would go on to become his trademark. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #4-8]
When the Phoenix Force began to make its way to Earth, many former hosts and those who shared a connection with the cosmic force, Quentin included, suffered a psychic seizure. Quentin recovered in time to find the X-Men and Avengers at war with each other over how to deal with the Phoenix’s arrival. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #9] Over time, the conflict escalated immensely and Professor Xavier arrived at the Jean Grey School to assist the X-Men in taking down a Phoenix-corrupted Cyclops. Reunited with his former teacher, Quentin dished out his usual insults. Professor 
X was disappointed to see Quentin stuck in his old ways, suppressing his true potential. Realizing that a typical punishment would just fuel Quentin’s rebelliousmess, Professor Xavier tried a different approach. He broadcasted to the school that he was publicly endorsing Quentin for student council president, even revealing Quentin’s full name, Quintavius, to the student body in the process. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #15] While the final battle of the Phoenix conflict raged on Utopia, the Jean Grey School held a “End of the World” dance. It was at this dance that the pious Idie surprised everyone by dancing with and kissing Quentin. The night was bittersweet, as while the Phoenix conflict was finally resolved, Professor Xavier had been killed by Cyclops in the final battle and Broo had been shot in the head by an unknown assailant. Quentin’s amusement over Idie’s personality shift quickly turned into concern when the students of the Jean Grey School found themselves fighting against an evil circus run by Frankenstein’s 
monster and a witch named Calcabrina. Quentin happened upon Idie burning Calcabrina alive with her mutant heat powers and showing no mercy as the witch screamed in agony. Although Calcabrina escaped, Quentin was alarmed at Idie’s willingness to murder. He assured Idie that he wouldn’t report what he witnessed to the X-Men but, moving forward, he began to keep a close eye on her behavior. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #21-23] Idie wasn’t the only girl Quentin had his eyes on. When Beast pulled the original five X-Men to the present, Quentin found himself living amongst a teenage Jean Grey and couldn’t resist the urge to try to “score” with her. Although Jean found Quentin’s upfront personality refreshing, she wisely resisted his flirtations. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #24]
When it came time for Captain America to check in on his progress, he decided to drag Quentin along on a mission to a secret A.I.M. weapons cache. Quentin outright refused to help and instead berated the star-spangled Avenger with endless insults. However, when Captain America fell victim to a psychic attack, Quentin was pulled into his mind and came face to face with a pre-super soldier serum Steve Rogers. Perhaps feeling a tinge of newfound respect, Quentin fought alongside him 
and saved his mind from a psychic assault. Satisfied that Quentin came through in the end, Captain America declared that he was no longer a prisoner and free to leave the Jean Grey School whenever he liked. Quentin feared what would happen to his self-image if he returned to school a free man after a team-up with Captain America and so Cap helped Quentin maintain his reputation by dropping him back off at the Jean Grey school in handcuffs under the ruse that was still a prisoner there. Feeling like the school was losing traction, Logan decided to take some of the more troubled students on a field trip to the Savage land and, of course, Quentin was part of that group. On route to their destination, Quentin got some troubling news from Wolverine – he had been elected Student Council President. While Quentin was dismayed about his new role, Wolverine was happy that the final wishes of Professor Xavier were being fulfilled and that Quentin had a chance to live up to his full potential.
Upon landing, Wolverine left the group on their own, giving them a mission to work together to survive for 24 hours. Given the many perils of the Savage Land, this proved to be quite the struggle for the inexperienced students and Quentin took it upon himself to act as leader. Unfortunately, his 
peers weren’t ready to take him seriously and the group of students argued and went their separate ways. The Savage Land proved even more dangerous than usual when Dog Logan, Wolverine’s long lost brother, showed up. Wanting to prove himself the better of the Logans by teaching his brother’s students a lesson of his own, he transported armies of cavemen, cowboys and robots from across time and taught the students how to fight his way. Quentin quickly realized that Dog was a sick man, driven mad by jealousy toward his famous brother and, when Dog’s true colors eventually showed, Quentin and his fellow students stood together as a team against him, leading Wolverine to declare the survival field trip a slight success. Quentin continued to express concern over Idie’s increasingly erratic behavior and, when she left the Jean Grey School to attend the Hellfire Club’s new school for mutants, he was determined to get answers. Using his telepathy, he discovered that Idie had gone undercover at the the Hellfire Academy to get revenge on the person who attacked Broo. With the X-Men accusing him of assisting the Hellfire Club’s recruitment plans, Quentin had no choice but to take matters into his own hands and, following Idie’s footsteps, left to join the Hellfire Academy.
