ALTERNATE VERSIONS
X-Men: Children of the Atom was an odd attempt at a reboot (or Year One story), released less than a year before Ultimate X-Men made the idea work. This revised origin for the X-Men initially 
had Scott, Hank, and Bobby attending Freeport High School, which Xavier infiltrated as a guidance counselor to evaluate and recruit them. Jack A. Winters was a career criminal who recruited Scott as an orphan for his powers. He acted as an abusive foster parent to exploit Scott’s optic blast for his gang. Scott eventually stood up to Jack with his eye beams but refused to go so far as to kill his abuser.
