BIOGRAPHY

Every 10,000 years, the planets align in such a way that an ancient being of terrible power called Llan is able to manifest on the planet Earth. While his origin remains shrouded in mystery, he is mystical in nature, with the sole purpose of guiding mankind to its own destruction and transforming it into one of the Twisted Realms. Llan commands the Forces of Darkness, the unfortunate creatures who have fallen to his deadly machinations. They exist beyond, within those Twisted Realms, behind the Gateway of Night, also known as the Eye of the World, which is located in the Arctic. The only known counter to Llan is whoever wears the Coronet of Power, the being known by the title of “Talisman,” and the two must abide by a series of rules in combat.

It is not known when Llan first appeared on Earth, but it was seemingly mortal worshippers who ushered in his return, circa 18,000 B.C.E. These mortals worshipped an idol which they believed represented Llan. During this time, Llan played an undisclosed role in the Great Cataclysm, which saw Atlantis and Lemuria sink to the depths of the ocean. Speculation is that Llan worked alongside the Dweller in Darkness, the Deviants, the Darkholders or other evil forces, during this time. In an unchronicled event, the wearer of the Coronet of Power at that time defeated Llan by tricking him into taking the form of the idol for breaching the rules of combat, which stated that they could not be worshipped. As each 10,000-year cycle drew closer, it seemed that Llan's strength began to increase, and he was able to influence events on Earth (specifically in Canada) before he manifested. As his next return drew near, circa 8,000 B.C.E., a young woman called Nahita of the Elk Tribe began to dream of a strange idol, and of the future, ruined and polluted. After escaping a rain of animal bones, Nahita met with four warriors from the legendary Tribe of the Moon. One of them gave Naihta the Coronet of Power and she became the new Talisman.

Her appointment was timely, as Llan continued to reach out from beyond, influencing mysterious threats which Nahita and the Tribe of the Moon battled, like the Creatures of the Caves, the Sharks from Beyond Time, Deviants from the lost continent Lemuria, and the Dimension Giants. Nahita was able to divine that the true threat which faced her, and the Tribe of the Moon, was fast approaching. The Elk Tribe were the next to be impacted by Llan, as a meteorite struck their village, mutating several of the tribe, eventually killing them all. This merely added to Nahita's hatred of Llan. Finally, Llan returned when an earthquake broke the barrier, and he quickly vowed to seed mankind's thoughts with ways to use fossil fuels that would choke and kill the world.

Llan proceeded to open the Gateway of Night so that his Forces of Darkness could manifest and begin to add to the ruin of Earth. As his army battled the Tribe of the Moon, Llan took the form of a large dragon, and waited in the crater of the Gateway of Night for Nahita to arrive, knowing that they must battle each other alone. Llan boasted that he would teach man to sully his world with filth and chemicals, to fill food with poison and have children born as deformed nightmares, turning this world into one of the Twisted Realms.

Llan's arrogance knew no limits and, when Nahita produced the very idol through which he made people worship him, she reminded him of the first Talisman's curse that he must take the form of the idol when they battled. Llan agreed to abide by this curse and transformed into a copy of the idol, upon which he found himself trapped. While he boasted of his plans to her, Nahita had subtly walked around him, encasing a binding spell around him. He was now trapped in the form of that idol for the next 10,000 years, and Nahita warned Llan that he may never be able to win. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #83]

As the 20th Century drew to a close, the next 10,000-year planetary alignment loomed. Llan's influence reached beyond the realms yet again, and he once again apparently had an influence in some events which took place in Canada. These included the return of the Great Beasts, the awakening of Pestilence and the manifestation of the Dreamqueen, threats which were all vanquished by Alpha Flight, a team of super powered beings dedicated to protecting the Great White North. Alpha Flight's roster included the current wearer of the Coronet of Power – Elizabeth Twoyoungman, called Talisman. The team was in a state of flux, having saved Canada from the evil machinations of the Dreamqueen, while being in a difficult state with the Canadian authorities.

Llan influenced a young man called Dexter Raynes, an accountant, to bring his wife of two years, Carol, on vacation into the wilderness. Dexter was concerned with the state of the planet, specifically the environmental impact mankind was having. It was while explaining the devastation mankind has had on the environment to his wife that Dexter tripped and fell on what looked like a rock, sticking out from the ground. However, when Dexter pulled the rock free, he discovered it was the ancient Llan idol. Dexter suspected that the idol was not Native American, and Carol wondered if it was something from Atlantis. Dexter's mood suddenly changed when Carol tried to be intimate with him, and he turned his back on her. He then fell into a sleep that was filled with visions of the idol, where Llan spoke to him, boasting that they will do great things together. Llan claimed to Dexter that the company for which he worked helped corporations pollute the Earth, and that his wife was cheating on him. Llan also warned Dexter that his world would die in twenty years, thanks to pollution, but that Dexter could help him do something about it.

The next morning, Dexter's mood had sullied even further, snapping at Carol and lurking in the woods, muttering to the idol. Dexter apparently learned that, in order to gain the powers, he would need to do something to Carol. He returned to the camp where Carol was preparing some food and strangled her. This increased Llan's strength and, at Llan's instruction, Dexter strung Carol upside down from a tree and placed the idol in a bucket underneath her. Dexter then sliced Carol's throat, and the blood dissolved the idol that trapped Llan. Dexter then proceeded to drink the blood of his wife, into which the statue had dissolved. Through this mystic act, Llan was able to take possession of Dexter's body, whereby he manifested a blue costume and a fiery appearance. Llan was determined to change the world as he previously attempted but knew that, to accomplish it, he would need to kill some people, and set his sights on Alpha Flight. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #71]

Llan manifested at the home where Talisman and Alpha Flight's leader, Vindicator, were arguing. Talisman was being cryptic about the approaching danger, and Vindicator was demanding answers. Llan proceeded to provide those answers by transporting Talisman and Vindicator to a strange realm known as a “non-zone,” which was built by celestial beings as a combat area. He plucked the rest of Alpha Flight – Shaman, Sasquatch and Box – along with their associate, Diamond Lil, to the non-zone. Llan was challenged by several of the heroes, who attacked him – but his power was great, and he easily defended himself. Knowing there was no way that Talisman would challenge him directly, Llan proceeded to crush Madison Jeffries within the Box armor, leaving Talisman with no option other than attack Llan with her powerful magic, barely saving Madison. Llan was delighted by this, because he could not begin to freely set about the polluting of Earth until the wearer of the Coronet of Power had made the first move. Llan then departed the non-zone, where he left Talisman and the others trapped and with seemingly no way to get back to Earth and Canada, which desperately needed them. With Alpha Flight gone, wandering from one dimension to another on a quest to return back to their true Earth, Llan set about with his plan to bring ruin to the planet. He influenced certain government officials, turning them against Alpha Flight, and had a hand in the formation of a new government-sanctioned super team, Gamma Flight, consisting of several associates of Alpha Flight and new super-beings. The team would be kept busy by Llan's threats and, without little time to discover his true plans. Llan also began using demons to possess innocent people, including children, using them as pawns in his plans. It was one such child, possessed by a terrible demon, that Alpha Flight discovered when they finally returned to Earth. The possessed girl gave Alpha Flight a dire warning before she died in Talisman's' arms. Clearly, there was no limit to the level of cruelty Llan was capable of. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #76]

Llan's reach was not without bounds, however, as Alpha Flight found some support thanks to government officials in Edmonton, who felt a debt of gratitude for ridding the Dreamqueen from their city months earlier. Alpha Flight were gifted a new headquarters in an old local government building, which was, according to Talisman, built over a place of great power, and would be critical in assisting them to defeat Llan. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #78]

Llan was an incredibly smart being and took advantage of any opportunity that would help him reach his goals. Not only was pollution destroying Lake Superior, arriving into Canada from the United States and resulting in the wildlife developing tumors, but the United States' government was in the process of attempting to pass the Super-Powers Registration Act. Llan made the most of this and was able to influence four dangerous super villains into entering Canada – Nekra, Scorpion, Asp and the Owl, all of whom crossed the border. He needed the dangerous criminals to do what they did best in order for him to be able to unlock the Gateway of Night – he needed them to cause chaos and do violence. The four villains eventually converged in Winnipeg, where Vindicator and Diamond Lil engaged them in battle. Gamma Flight soon joined, with the intention of arresting Alpha Flight as per their government directive. Llan's plan worked and the Acts of Violence caused by the battling super beings formed the perfect key to open the Gateway of Night. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #79-80]

Llan soon found Talisman attempting to confront him directly, via the Astral Plane. With her teammates either imprisoned or incapacitated, Talisman had sent spirits to retrieve help from former Alphans and associates. However, while they gathered, Talisman knew she had to learn more about Llan and take the fight to him. Llan easily discovered Talisman when she started snooping for information and he kept her busy, chasing her while taking the forms of various creatures, and capturing her in an astral laboratory. Talisman, having collected the knowledge of Nahita, acknowledged that mankind had begun polluting the planet as Llan had hoped, but was certain that humanity would find the right path and save themselves. Llan disputed this and boasted that he would win. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #83]

Alpha Flight was kept busy, first dealing with demon-possessed government officials and then with Gamma Flight. Meanwhile, Talisman followed up on her promise to defeat Llan by journeying alone to the Gateway of Night. However, by the time Talisman arrived, the Gateway of Night was now open, and the Forces of Darkness from the Twisted Realms were descending upon the Earth. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #84]

Talisman was joined by military forces who arrived to deal to the incoming Forces of Darkness, but the soldiers were no match for the demons. Fortunately, Alpha Flight, Gamma Flight and the other allies had gathered together and united with a common purpose – to defeat the Forces of Darkness, while Talisman closed the Gateway of Night and put an end to Llan. To do that, Talisman needed to open the Gateway of Day, however Llan captured Talisman to stop her. Despite Talisman sending Northstar and Aurora to find Dr. Strange in order for him to help, Llan boasted that she was out of time. Llan found a formidable foe in Talisman, who kept him busy, first with words and then with her powers, until Alpha Flight regrouped and were able to fight him directly too. Fortunately, Northstar and Aurora reached Dr. Strange and assisted him in opening the Gateway of Day from the inside, while Talisman opened it from the outside. As the Forces of Light entered the Earth, Llan's reeled in horror, as he knew that both forces could not exist on the same plane, and that they would cancel each other out. Indeed, this began to happen as the two armies raced towards each other. At the same time, Llan began to fade from existence, but not without cursing Alpha Flight. He warned them that some of them would live to see their world become a polluted hell, but that most would die horrible deaths. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #85-86]

While it is unlikely Llan can return from another 10,000 years, his work is being done for him anyway and, despite the efforts of heroes like Alpha Flight, there may not be a planet Earth left for Llan to destroy – mankind is doing a good enough job for him.
